Clinical Chemist

Sint Maarten Diagnostic Center Laboratory (SMDC) is looking for a CLINICAL CHEMIST! The purpose of this position is to complete the enthusiastic and dedicated team of the Sint Maarten Diagnostic Center Laboratory (SMDC). A Clinical Chemist is a specialized healthcare professional responsible for working in a diagnostic laboratory to provide critical information that aids healthcare providers in patient care decisions. They ensure the quality and reliability of test results by adhering to strict safety and regulatory standards. Additionally, they may contribute to research, develop new diagnostic techniques, and participate in educational and accreditation initiatives within their organization.

The SMDC Clinical Chemist will work primarily in a diagnostic center where medical care and diagnostic services are combined. It is a full-time position with potential evening or weekend shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

• Regulatory Compliance - Function in accordance with international laboratory and ethical standards, assisting SMDC with the ISO 15189 Accreditation process. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO) and maintain proper documentation. Provide guidance to ensure compliance with St. Maarten regulations, as well as industry best practices. Meetings with the Ministry of VSA (Inspectorate and CPS) might be required.

• Data Analysis & Reporting - Perform routine and specialized chemical analyses of biological samples. Interpret test results and provide recommendations to clinicians. Utilize statistical analysis tools and software to evaluate laboratory data, identify trends, and generate meaningful reports. Present findings and recommendations to management and key stakeholders.

• Operational Efficiency: Identify opportunities to streamline laboratory workflows and optimize resource utilization. Recommend and implement process improvements to increase productivity, reduce turnaround times, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

• Research & Innovation: Participate in research and development of new diagnostic methods or tests.

• Client Relationship Management: Collaborate with management team to understand client (patient, general practitioners, and medical specialists) needs and develop customized solutions. Act as a subject matter expert in client meetings, addressing technical queries and providing insights on biochemistry-related matters.

• Staff Training & Education: Develop and deliver training programs for laboratory staff to enhance their understanding of biochemistry principles, laboratory techniques, quality control procedures, and compliance requirements. Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the laboratory.
  

Requirements and skills needed:

• Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Clinical Chemistry or Biochemistry

• Board Certification from an accredited body (e.g., ABCC, ASCP) preferred

• 4+yrs. experience in laboratory management, overseeing clinical operations, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards

• Knowledge of and experience with laboratory quality systems ISO 15189

• Knowledge and experience with laboratory (automated) information systems

• Good command of the English language
